The EOS Lip Balm Story: From Startup to Major Success

How do you take a health care product that’s been a staple of the drugstore for decades and turn it into something new? EOS or Evolution of Smooth is a lip balm company that managed to do just that. Today, EOS is the number two lip balm company in the United States, reports They are second only to Burt’s Bees lip products, but they beat Chapstick and Blistex in every race.

About the EOS Company

Jonathan Teller and Sanjiv Mehra started EOS after the two had been working in consumer packaged goods and various other startup industries for several years. They wanted to shake things up in the beauty aisle, and they felt that changing lip balm was the best way to do it. Collectively, they discussed how lip balm hadn’t changed for decades.

Since the beginning of Chapstick, lip balms had been sold as a clinical product for chapped lips, which meant that it came in a boring tube and was sold in the lip care aisle of drugstores. In fact, lip balm is a product that is more than 100 years old, but the way people once thought of it is a far cry from how we see it today. Today, women carry lip balm like it’s a fashion accessory, and that’s all thanks to the amazing design and marketing skills of EOS co-founders Jonathan Teller and Sanjiv Mehra.

EOS Today

Today, you can see EOS lip balms everywhere. Those pastel orbs are sold in Walgreens, Racked, Target, and Walmart and all over the Internet. Famous people like Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus and Christina Aguilera have been seen putting on EOS lip balms at big events, and it’s certainly a beauty magazine favorite. Will it last? We hope so.
